dbClifford’s debut album RECYCLABLE proves him to be a young magnetic artist with abundant talent that is already known in many parts of the world. Having written, produced, recorded and played all the instruments on the album, the 26 year old artist is a seasoned trained songwriter and a respected musician. RECYCLABLE is a brilliantly unique record that is filled with funky pop melodies, unforgettable hooks and expressive lyrics. “Opinionated, romantic and naïve are the three words that would best describe the album’s goals and themes,” explains dbClifford. “Each element of the album had to fit the three word description.” dbClifford used the song ‘Simple Things’ as template for the rest of the album. It is a funky, poppy and opinionated song. The lyrical concept was loosely inspired by “My Favourite Things” from the musical The Sound of Music: a description of the simple things that help you get through the harsh and sometimes unfair realities of life. Other songs on the album bring up heavier subjects such as racial equality in ‘I Have A Dream’ inspired by the Martin Luther King Jr’s speech where dbClifford shares more individual feelings. “Musically this track is very challenging to play because of the constant change of key throughout the song,” explains dbClifford. He also delves in to more intimate and personal experiences on the album. From ‘Give Me Another Day’, an intense heartbreak experience, to ‘About a girl’ that was inspired by his first crush. dbClifford is a veteran musician for the young age of 26. Raised in France and England he was surrounded by music his entire life. Labeled a child prodigy, he had already mastered the opera Carmen on the piano at the age of five. At age eleven dbClifford began branching out towards drums and eventually bass, guitar and sax. At age eighteen he attended the prestigious CIAM School of Music in Bordeaux, France. After graduating dbClifford played in a British band where he developed a love for performing live and coincidentally met the fellow musician with whom he recorded his first demo album in 2000, Supernova. The duo then decided to move to Victoria British Columbia where they settled in very comfortably. It was the death of his mother that brought him back to France where he was able to reflect on what was really important in his life. Music was the outlet he used to express his thoughts. By January 2004 he had ten songs ready to record in his father’s house where he produced and played all of the instruments: the upright piano, live drums, bass, guitar and vocals on the album. This was the birth of RECYCLABLE. Once the album was complete dbClifford returned to Victoria. By the end of 2005 he had signed with Nettwerk Management and Nettwerk One (publishing). Early in 2006 he signed on with SONY BMG MUSIC (Canada) INC. RECYCLABLE's depth and focus attest to dbClifford's vision as an artist. “I wanted to create a timeless record and RECYCLABLE seemed to be the perfect description.” For the past two years dbClifford has been residing in Victoria BC. This August Daniel will be married to his Barrie native fiancée in the South of France and plans on moving to Toronto shortly thereafter. Upon the release of RECYCLABLE in September dbClifford will be hitting the road with his two band members to introduce their unforgettable live show to audiences across the country. Pianiste remarqué à l’âge de 5 ans, pré-ado multi-instrumentiste, db Clifford profite de l’isolement campagnard pour peaufiner ses dons. Imprégné de la culture « classic rock » de ses parents, il s’émancipe musicalement en se passionnant pour les grooves savants, l’élégance urbaine de groupes comme les Brand New Heavies, Incognito ou d’un chanteur comme Jamiroquai - sa première idole. Ceux-ci l’impressionnent au point que Daniel s’enferme pour reproduire leurs morceaux à la note près. Le talent de l’artiste dévore les expériences et les frontières. Après des premiers essais de groupes, db Clifford conçoit avec un ami Canadien une première maquette de chansons originales. Avec le culot de gamins habités par leur passion, ils traversent l’Atlantique. Leur démo séduit Babyface, le duo signe avec Interscope. Mais après un an et demi passé à Los Angeles, l’absence de projet concret les expatrie au Canada. A Victoria, Colombie-Britannique, Daniel, en parfait bilingue, se frotte aux meilleurs groupes locaux, étoffe encore son expérience et commence à se persuader qu’il peut s’épanouir en solo. Un drame, la mort de sa mère, bouleverse sa vie et accélère son destin. De retour en France, il choisit alors de se retirer dans la Dordogne de son enfance, vend les meubles de son appartement américain et, avec cet argent, achète ce qu’il faut de matériel pour enregistrer son disque à la maison. En six mois, le jeune homme compose et autoproduit les chansons de « Recyclable » comme crépite un feu d’artifice. Au piano, à la guitare, à la batterie, à la basse, et sans trucage synthétique, db Clifford fusionne son amour des mélodies pop et du « songwriting » à l’ancienne, des grooves sensuels du r’n’b et de la spiritualité soul. Un univers à la croisée des Beatles et de Stevie Wonder, d’Elton John et Marvin Gaye, de Coldplay et de Jamiroquai. Au chant, son falsetto sexy synthétise pareillement la palette noire et blanche de ses références. Sans les gadgets qui encombrent les musiques urbaines d’aujourd’hui, il se déhanche sur le piano funky de l’irrésistible « Don’t Wanna » ou du politique « Simple Things », dénude les émotions dans des ballades comme « Give Me Another Day » ou le légèrement psychédélique « Should I Wait », plonge dans la soie la mélodie de « About A Girl ». Pour définir son album, Daniel, qui habite maintenant Toronto, privilégie trois mots : engagé, naïf et romantique. On pourrait ajouter brillant, tendre, euphorisant. Signé au Canada par Sony-Bmg, publié d’abord outre-Atlantique, db Clifford a vu son album triompher au Japon (où « Don’t Wanna » a été n°1).
